Fed: Experts predict Aust to be spared SARS epidemic

Australian health authorities predict Australia will be spared an epidemic of the killerpneumonia SARS which has killed 79 people worldwide.

But a three-year-old Canadian girl is in a Melbourne hospital being monitored as apossible case of SARS.

The girl's parents arrived in Australia from Canada last weekend.

They took her to Shepparton Hospital yesterday with a soaring temperature and influenzasymptoms, fearing she may have Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

She was later transferred to Monash Medical Centre for observation.

Australia has notified WHO of one case of SARS but the victim, a British tourist, hasrecovered and since returned home.

There are another four suspected cases, one in Melbourne, two in New South Wales andone in Queensland.

But the commonwealth's deputy chief medical officer JOHN MATHEWS is confident Australiahas sufficient safeguards to prevent the virus reaching epidemic proportions.
